Three firefighters were hurt battling a suspicious apartment blaze Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters Mike Duncan and Steve Lilienthal suffered burns on their hands and faces after entering an apartment on Daytona Drive. Firefighter Tracy Freeman was hurt when the apartment ceiling collapsed and something struck him in the back of the neck, fire spokesman Chase Sargent said.

None of the injuries was serious. The firefighters were treated at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

The fire began shortly before 10 a.m. in a vacant apartment in the 3300 block of Daytona Drive.

Sargent said utilities had been turned off for several weeks and the apartment was supposed to be vacant.

Neighbors, however, told investigators that people had been using the apartment at night, Sargent said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Neighboring units were occupied and were slightly damaged, Sargent said. No residents were injured. by CNB
