Those who've passed by the campus of Norfolk State University in the last couple of weeks probably have noticed the banners.
They're hard to miss. They adorn every light pole.
Green and white and gold. ``Celebrating sixty years,'' they read. ``1935-1995. Where dreams become reality.''
With the university seal in the center.
The banners are the first - and most visible - signs of Norfolk State's 60th anniversary celebrations, according to Dr. Harrison B. Wilson, the university's president. Designed by Curtis Maddox, Norfolk State's vice president for operations, the banners - all 50 of them - went up last month and ring the campus.
Norfolk State has a small committee working on plans for the observance, and Wilson says the celebration has special meaning for him.
``This is also my 20th anniversary at Norfolk State, so we will observe both things,'' he said.
With classes back in session, other observances are planned. These include symposiums, bringing members of the first graduating class back to campus and a formal affair, Wilson said. Special activities also are being planned for commencement.
``We're a young school,'' Wilson said. ``These things are designed to build traditions. We want to excite both students and faculty, our constituencies.'' ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MOTOYA NAKAMURA
