Thomas Edward Coates Jr., 76, a retired railroad conductor, died Jan. 11, 1995, in his residence.
He was born in Halifax County and was retired from Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church, Kempsville Masonic Lodge (NU)196, AF & AM, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Temple of the Shrine and the Virginia Beach Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Cole Coates; a daughter, Barbara C. Mayo of Virginia Beach; two sons, Thomas E. Coates III of Chesapeake and David C. Coates of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by Fr. Francis Quinn. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday for visitation. Masonic rites will be accorded at the gravesite. Memorial donations may be made to the Renal Emergency Fund, c/o Sentara Leigh Hospital Dialysis, 844 Kempsville Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
