VELMA R. SMITH

Velma R. Smith, 84, of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive, a retired drapery maker, died Jan. 11, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born in Stumpy Point, N.C., and was a member of Coleman Place Chapel in Norfolk, where she was an ordained minister. She was a very active worker at CBN from its infancy and worked several years as a CBN volunteer prayer line operator. She was a member of the Bethel Temple Sisters in Prayer. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her daughter, Jacqueline F. Sawyer.

Survivors include a son, Gilford R. Toler of Aiea, Hawaii; a sister, Lida Midgette of New Port Richey, Fla.; two brothers, Truxton Payne of Chesapeake and Rupert Payne of Stumpy Point, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Gilbert Sawyer and Judy Pearman of Virginia Beach, Joycelyn Arnold and Henry Sawyer III, both of Norfolk, Patricia Hartung of Chesapeake, Cynthia Borskie and Alter Sawyer, both of Frankfurt, Ill., Debra Bair of Carmichaels, Pa., Mary Martin of Newport News and Sarina Toler of Waipahu, Hawaii; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside serivce will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Judy Wheeler and the Rev. Vilma Smith. The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
