Post-holiday diets all over Chesapeake will topple as thousands of Scouts from the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast invade the city's neighborhoods to tempt residents with eight varieties of cookies.
The council includes 16,000 girls and 5,300 adult volunteers in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina.
Chesapeake Girl Scouts began ringing doorbells last Saturday to take cookie orders. The cookies sell for $2.50 a box.
Through the cookie sales, Girl Scout troops earn money to support various activities during the year. Funds will also be used to help maintain Girl Scout camp properties, train volunteers and subsidize many other Scout projects, events and programs.
According to Girl Scout officials, the sales also help girls learn goal setting, develop responsibility, practice money management, build communications skills and enhance self-confidence.
This year's cookie line includes something new for those who are watching their waistlines - a low-fat cookie called ``Snaps.''
The iced-oatmeal Snaps are in accordance with the Girl Scouts' national service project, ``Be Your Best,'' emphasizing health and fitness. The new line boasts a 2 percent fat content and less than 20 calories per cookie.
If the Scouts miss your house, you can still buy cookies by calling a special cookie hotline at 340-YUMM.
In addition, cookie booths will be set up during February at various shopping centers throughout Chesapeake. MEMO: For more information about the annual Girl Scout cookie sale, call the
