James Francis Shepherd, 81, of the 100 block of Afton Parkway, died Jan. 13, 1995, in Portsmouth.
Mr. Shepherd was born in Ripley, Miss., and retired as head of the Underwater Research Unit at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 35 years. He was a member of Cradock Baptist Church, lifetime member of the American Radio Relay League, the Mount Horeb Royal Arch Chapter (NU)11 in Portsmouth; and was a Mason and Shriner. He graduated from Mississippi State.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita E. Shepherd; a daughter, Helen D. Weaver of Green Bay, Va.; a son, W.K. ``Sonny'' Stout of Virginia Beach; a sister, Polly Rea of Geneva, Ala.; a brother, T.C. Shepherd of Jackson, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Cradock Baptist Church by Dr. David R. Denny. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to Cradock Baptist Church.
