ALASKAN OFFICIAL IS SUCCESSFUL AT HONORING N.C. REPRESENTATIVE

The room where the late Walter B. Jones Sr. chaired the House of Representatives Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee will be named in his honor.

The action came after a letter from Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, to House Speaker Newt Gingrich asking for the name change.

In the letter, Young said, ``Chairman Jones was a southern Democrat of the old school. He was always a gentleman, both as chairman and as a person. . . . It is ironic that his son, Walter B. Jones Jr. will serve in the 104th Congress as a Republican. In a sense, the past has merged with the future.''

Jones' son praised the action.

``This memorial will serve as a constant reminder of my father's dedicated service both to the United States, and to the people of eastern North Carolina.'' Jones Sr. served in the House for 26 years. His son was elected in 1994. by CNB
