ALL ABOARD TO HELP SAVE DOWNTOWN TRAIN DEPOT

After the CSX train station on Main Street suffered a major fire on Nov. 23, many people asked what they could do to help save it.

Representatives of the Downtown Suffolk Association and the Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society formed the S.O.S. (Save Our Station) Committee, and negotiations are being completed to acquire this historic property.

We're about to apply for a federal grant, and we need letters of support for the restoration of the building immediately. Very brief letters are just fine - just voice support. The grant application will be hand-delivered Jan. 26, and letters will accompany the application. We need more than 200 letters by Jan. 23.

The S.O.S. Committee will appear before City Council on Jan. 18 to seek city support and authorization for the grant application. Citizens' presence at the 7 p.m. meeting would be a welcome show of interest and concern. We would also be happy to have letters with us to share with the council.

Letters may be mailed or hand-delivered. The mailing address is: S.O.S., c/o Downtown Suffolk Association, 201 N. Main St., Suite B, Suffolk, Va. 23434.

Letters may be delivered to 201 N. Main St., the lobby of Central Fidelity Bank, the D.S.A. office upstairs, or the lobby of Crestar Bank, 123 N. Main St.

Perhaps this tragic fire will result in long-overdue action to restore our beloved train station as well as other historic buildings on Main Street.
