Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .
Rufus Outland, a former basketball coach at Portsmouth Catholic High School and Frederick Military Academy, has returned to the coaching ranks.
Outland, the athletic director at Portsmouth Catholic when it closed its doors, is coaching the middle school team at Norfolk Collegiate. The team competes at Cape Henry each Saturday. Court Street Academy is the lone Portsmouth team in the league.
Outland still makes his home in Portsmouth.
Former Wilson High School track star LaTasha Colander hit the win column in her first college meet.
The University of North Carolina freshman won the 200-meter dash and was runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles at George Mason last week.
Don't look for any merger of Portsmouth and Norfolk schools in a new district alignment or Chesapeake aligning with Suffolk schools. At present, the Suffolk schools show no desire to move to the Southeastern District. Poor attendance in games between Norfolk and Portsmouth schools and the long association with rivals in Chesapeake has soured Portsmouth officials on a Norfolk-Portsmouth conference.
Congratulations to Churchland High School coaches Bobbi Shuler and Duke Conrad on their recent marriage. The two were married in Lynchburg on New Year's Eve and brought back wedding cake to members of the girls basketball team.
There's no timetable yet on the demise of Frank D. Lawrence Stadium, but it was a 6-1 vote by City Council last week for the appropriation of $150,000 from the Capital Improvements Fund for the demolition. Bernard Griffin was opposed.
Demolition is expected in the spring. This could mean that Churchland, Wilson and Norcom will be playing at Churchland Stadium next fall, necessitating Thursday or Saturday games.
Those interested in bidding on leasing Bide-A-Wee Golf Club from the city may find this item in the lease:
The operator of the course will provide at least 72 newly manufactured golf carts in excellent condition at no further expense to the city beginning Oct. 1, 1997.
Currently the city is leasing 60 carts at a rising annual fee from Eastern Golf Cart of Maryland under an agreement that expires Sept. 30, 1997.
The Churchland Baseball Association is constructing a press box/storage shed at its Pony League field, which will be ready for spring baseball.
League officials said benefactors and sponsors who purchased sign boards helped the league to purchase a new net for the Colt field backstop and a tractor and mowing deck.
Bill Kline had the unusual experience of bagging two deer with a single shot.
While hunting with the Dunn Hunt Club at Sussex County, Kline brought down an 11-point 200-pounder and an 8-point 155-pounder with one shot. He is having them mounted - on a single plaque naturally.
Boo Williams, who is on the selection committee for the McDonald's All-American Game, will be the speaker at Monday's noon meeting of the Portsmouth Sports Club at Holiday Inn-Portside.
The director of the state's premier summer basketball league and some of the top AAU teams, Williams has been primarily responsible for 260 athletes receiving partial or full college grants in basketball.
The Churchland Soccer League is continuing its fund drive to assist in the mounting medical expenses of 11-year-old Jason Wallbank, a player and game official in the league who was seriously burned in a home fire.
Wallbank is still hospitalized in the burn unit at Sentara Norfolk General.
Contributions should be sent to the Jason Wallbank Burn Fund, P.O. Box 1144, Portsmouth, 23705 or they can be made at any Commerce Bank office. ILLUSTRATION: Rufus Outland has returned to coaching.
