Virginia Opera presents a world premiere production of ``Simon Bolivar,'' a two-act opera by composer/librettist Thea Musgrave.

In Spanish, with English supertitles. General director Peter Mark conducts a cast including tenors Stephen Guggenheim and Michael Lynn Galanter, baritones Douglas Nagel and Russell Cusick and soprano Amy Johnson. Stage direction and Spanish translation by Lillian Garrett-Groag. Set design by John Conklin.

Performances are Friday and Jan. 27 at 8 p.m., Sunday and Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Next Wednesday's performance is at 7:30 p.m., with an introductory lecture at 6:15.

Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Virginia Opera hosts a Bolivar Festival Day, featuring Latin-American dancers and musicians at the Harrison Opera House. The festivities begin with ``The Morning After,'' a panel discussion featuring Mark, Musgrave, Garrett-Groag, costume designer David Murin, lighting designer Mark Stanley and dance/fight choreographer Holly Harbinger.

At 1:30 p.m., mezzo Desiree Halac presents the educational program ``Bolivar: Music of the Americas,'' which will be followed by the presentation of awards in the student poster art competition. Prizes up to $100 and four opera tickets will be awarded to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Posters are currently on display at the Harrison Opera House and Norfolk International Airport.

Visitors may also take a backstage tour of the Harrison Opera House. At 3 p.m., the nearby Chrysler Museum will offer a guided tour of art related to Bolivar.

Feb. 4, Musgrave, Mark and cast members appear at the Organization of American States headquarters in Washington, D.C., for a lecture and banquet.

On Feb. 5, Musgrave and Mark will speak at the Smithsonian Institution as part of a weekly course, ``The Makings of an Opera: Penetrating the Creative Powers.'' Their talk is titled ``Behind the Scenes at a World Premiere.'' Other speakers on the series include Opera Company of Boston founder Sarah Caldwell and baritone Thomas Stewart. Feb. 8 and 10 at 8 p.m., ``Bolivar'' is performed at Richmond's Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. An introductory program will be offered an hour before each performance. Tickets $22-$56. For more information, call (804) 643-6004.
