Margaret Lawrence Lofton, 93, the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret Woodley Lawrence, died Jan. 15, 1995, at Lake Taylor Hospital.
A native of Norfolk, she taught biology for 42 years at Booker T. Washington High School and retired in 1966. She attended Norfolk Public Schools, received a B.S. degree from Howard University and an M.S. degree from Columbia University. She did additional graduate work at the University of Chicago, Hunter College, Rutgers University and Hampton University.
A lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Vestry, served on the Altar Guild, was the president of St. Cecelia's Guild, treasurer of Grace's Corner and attended Adult Bible Class.
She was instrumental in starting the first three black Girl Scout troops in Norfolk and served as Basileus of the Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, of which she was a life member. She served on the Board of Directors of the Phyllis Wheatley Y.W.C.A. and the Norfolk Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She was secretary of the Board of Norfolk Community Hospital for over 30 years. She was active in the National Education Association, the National Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the NAACP.
She was a member of the Women's Club, the Friday Evening Bridge Club, The Relaxers and the Colonial Maids. She was the founder and first president of the Norfolk Chapter of the Links, Inc.
She is survived by a niece, Helen B. Hudson; a nephew, Oscar Brown Jr.; and a host of grand-nieces and grand-nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1995, at noon with interment at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Norfolk Community Hospital. The family and friends will assemble at Hale Funeral Home at 11 a.m. The remains of Mrs. Lofton will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
