PELEG DAMERON MIDGETT JR.

Peleg Dameron Midgett Jr. died Jan. 17, 1995, at Cypress Glen Methodist Retirement Home, Greenville, N.C., where he had resided for the past two years.

He was born in Wanchese, N.C., and graduated from Trinity College (which is now Duke University) in 1922. Mr. Midgett moved from Craddock to Engelhard, N.C., in Dec., 1934, where he built, owned and operated Pamlico Power and Light Company beginning in 1935 until 1975 when the company was sold to Tideland EMC. In 1935, Mr. Midgett organized and was a charter member and the first president of the Engelhard Rotary Club. He was Rotary District Governor from 1953-54. He was an active member of the Engelhard United Methodist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class for 30 years and chaired two committees to rebuild the church. Mr. Midgett chaired all the major charitable organizations in Hyde County and was a member of the Executive Committee of the East Carolina Bank, American Small Business Organizations; President of Southern Albemarle Association, Greater Albemarle Association and Coastal Historyland of North Carolina.

Mr. Midgett is survived by one daughter, Martha M. Kelly of Newport News; three sons, P.D. Midgett III of Southport, N.C., George E. Midgett of Denver, N.C. and Bernard W. Midgett of Buxton, N.C.; one brother, John B. Midgett of Hillsboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Engelhard United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Church annex from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service. The graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Tillett Family Cemetery in Wanchese, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The P.D. Midgett Jr. Scholarship Fund, Engelhard Rotary Club, C/O Al O'Neal, P.O. Box 55, Engelhard, N.C. 27824. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, N.C. is in charge of these arrangements.
