Samuel Simpson Cobb Jr., 77, died Jan. 16, 1995, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Cobb, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, retired from the Norfolk Fire Department in 1975 after 33 years. He was a captain and the first chief of the department's arson bureau. Capt. Cobb was a past president of the International Association of Arson Investigators and wrote two books and numerous articles on arson investigation.
Following his retirement from the fire department, Capt. Cobb taught for six years at Tidewater Community College. Most recently, he served as a volunteer at the Sergeant Memorial Room at Kirn Library and to the security department at DePaul Hospital. At the library, he conducted extensive genealogical research and published many volumes of indexed records.
Survivors include his son, Gary S. Cobb of Norcross, Ga.; his daughter, Cheryl Cobb Kelly of Columbia, S.C.; and grandchildren, Brian S. Cobb of Athens, Ga., Michelle C. Dolske of Cleveland, and Kevin S. Kelly of Columbia, S.C.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Norfolk. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the DePaul Health Foundation, 150 Kingsley Lane, Norfolk, Va. 23505.
