THE TWO-WEEKEND run of ``Shirley Valentine,'' the one-woman show that opened Friday at Little Theater of Virginia Beach, has sold out.
To accommodate demand for tickets, an extra performance has been added at 8 tonight.
Tickets are $6 to $8. Call 428-9233 for reservations.
The Willy Russell comedy is about a middle-aged Liverpool housewife stuck with a demanding husband and a dull routine. As she contemplates taking a Greek holiday with a feminist girlfriend, we learn her views on children, marriage, sex and love.
Virginia Beach actress Shirley Hurd has the role of Shirley Valentine and is directed by her husband, Bentley Anderson, also a prominent area thespian.
Opening night, eight members of the local ``Shirley Valentine Club'' sat on the front row, Hurd said. During the champagne reception that followed, Hurd met with club members.
``Apparently, they all went to the Naro (movie theater) one night and saw `Shirley Valentine.' And now, once a month, they get together and watch the movie,'' Hurd said.
With membership comes rules. ``They told me they have to watch the movie without their husbands, they have to cry and they must learn to use phrases from the movie.''
Hurd's performance was the first time the club had seen the stage version. ``So they all had me sign their programs. It certainly added to the excitement of opening night.''
