WILLIAM A. WILCOX

William Alvah Wilcox, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1995, in Obici Hospital.

After graduating from Suffolk High School, Mr. Wilcox attended the University of Alabama until going into the Army, where he served as Captain during World War II. While in the service, he met Betty J. Sutterby and they were married in 1943. In 1947 they returned to his hometown of Suffolk, Va. Mr. Wilcox was a member of West End Baptist Church. He was active and well loved in his community, where he was a member of various civic organizations and was involved in the peanut industry.

Mr. Wilcox was the son of the late William Thomas Wilcox and Vera Ballard Gwynn Wilcox and his maternal grandmother, Eugenia Ballard Gwynn. He is survived by his wife, Betty S. Wilcox; two daughters, Gwynn W. Sutterby of Orlando, Fla., and Molly-Jeanne Ballard Wilcox Crow of Suffolk; two sons, William Michael Wilcox of Virginia Beach and Robert Mitchell Rawles Wilcox of Suffolk; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd T. Irby Jr. and Dr. Donald J. Dunlap. Friends may join the family in Hill Funeral Home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to West End Baptist Church, 501 W.
