A 16-year-old student from another school walked into Green Run High School with a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun as classes ended Tuesday, but ran when the principal confronted him, police said Wednesday.
Two police officers arrested the student at a home near Green Run High.
Police spokesman Mike Carey said the student from Princess Anne High School walked into Green Run through a side door shortly after 2 p.m. The teen was showing the gun to students when someone told school officials, police said.
Carey said the teen, whose name is being withheld because of his age, also was carrying a loaded spare magazine.
``There is no indication the student planned to use the gun at the school,'' Carey said. ``But we can't come up with a good reason for why he had it, either.''
He was charged with having a firearm on school property, a felony, and was suspended from school. He could be expelled.
Carey said the gun is not listed as stolen in a national crime computer, but police are tracing the weapon's ownership.
This is the 10th time since classes began in September that a gun investigation at a city school has led to an arrest.
