I disagree with Ted Gettinger III (``Let Public Broadcasting compete,'' letter, Dec. 25). Since there are more than 50 cable stations in the Hampton Roads area, he doesn't think we need to help keep public broadcasting on the air.
What about the people who don't have cable available to them, or who might not be able to afford cable if it were available to them? There is a large area of Suffolk where cable is not an option.
Big Bird (and ``Sesame Street'') and Barney set good examples for my grandchildren. I hope all children will continue to have the opportunity to grow up with them as my children and my grandchildren have done.
