ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION HONORS ABE GOLDBLATT

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

A memorial resolution honoring sports writer Abe Goldblatt was introduced at the General Assembly by House of Delegates member William S. Moore Jr.

``Mr. Goldblatt's columns informed and enriched the lives of readers for many years and I was pleased to have the opportunity to recognize his contributions in this way,'' said Moore.

Moore requested that the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of the resolution for presentation to Goldblatt's family ``as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.''

The Portsmouth Sports Club also plans to submit Goldblatt's name as a future candidate for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Boo Williams, Hampton Roads's AAU basketball overseer, says the two best high school basketball players in the area probably are both on the Churchland team - D. J. Dunbar and Marvin Rodgers. Rodgers is not eligible until mid-semester. He will be returning to the Truckers' lineup on the night they play at Maury.

Williams contends basketball is so highly developed in other countries now that ``the U.S. has to have pro players to be able to compete in the Olympic Games.''

Nancy Wren, who was a leading figure in bringing the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour to this area for many years, is recovering at home after surgery.

Also on the hospital list is longtime Virginian-Pilot sports correspondent Jim ``Head'' Turner, who underwent a five-way bypass Wednesday at Sentara Norfolk General.

Former Manor High School standout Sean Blackwell continues to play well for Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team.

The Marlins pulled off a lopsided 82-59 victory over nationally ranked Roanoke College and Blackwell, a freshman center, chipped in 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

In an 85-74 overtime loss to Hampden-Sydney, Blackwell scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had three assists and two more blocked shots.

Churchland coaches believe the school's football field will need resodding if it is to accommodate all of the city's varsity teams next season. by CNB
