The Western Wind, a vocal ensemble with a repertoire that ranges from Renaissance motets to '50s rock 'n' roll, will perform at Centenary United Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Feb. 4.
This will be their first appearance in South Hampton Roads. The group sang at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg in 1987.
The program is one of five special concerts scheduled by Centenary this year.
The New York-based ensemble of six men and women sings a capella. The group frequently performs on National Public Broadcasting. Founded in 1969, they have sung in Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
Their show, ``The Western Wind Songbook: A Cabaret,'' had a popular run in New York in the late 1980s. In 1988, they received the ASCAP-Chamber Music American Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
Members of the sextet are William Zukof, countertenor; Phyllis E. Clark and Cheryl Bensman Rose, sopranos; Lawrence Bennett and William Lyon Lee, tenors; and Elliot Z. Levine, baritone.
Other concerts, all free and open to the public, scheduled at Centenary include the following: Exaudi, a 16-voice chamber chorus from Havana, Cuba, making its only appearance outside Washington, D.C., here, 7:30 p.m. March 15; the U.S. Continental Army Band, 7:30 p.m. April 25; and the Philadelphia Vocal Quartet, 7:30 p.m. May 12.
