OFF-DUTY DEPUTY ASSAULTED BY 1 OF THREE TEENS SOUGHT IN SPREE

An off-duty sheriff's deputy was assaulted Saturday by one of three teenagers police believe are responsible for a mini-crime spree.

The deputy, who was out of uniform, was in a convenience store in the 1900 block of Victory Blvd. when three males came in about 7:20 p.m.

The deputy tried to detain one of the men after he deliberately spilled merchandise on the floor of the store. That's when she was hit.

The deputy, whose name was not released, suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized. The men fled.

Police believe the trio is responsible for at least three robberies. They are driving a stolen vehicle.

The first of the earlier robberies occurred at 5:58 p.m., when a woman was robbed at gunpoint at the Food Lion grocery store in the 1900 block of Victory Blvd.

At 6:43 p.m., another woman was robbed at gunpoint at the Food Lion grocery store in the 5600 block of Portsmouth Blvd.

While police were investigating that case, another woman came up and said she had just been robbed by the same teenagers while she was at Chesapeake Square Mall.

Police said the teenagers are believed to be 16 to 17 years old. They were riding in a blue Jeep Cherokee with Virginia license plates IAB-408. The vehicle was reported stolen Tuesday in Virginia Beach.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 393-8536 or Crime Line at 488-7777.
