James Leon Sanders, 64, of the 3300 block of Courtney Road, a retired conductor for Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad, died Jan. 22, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Sanders, a native of Rock Hill, S.C., was a member of West End United Methodist Church, Churchland Masonic Lodge (NU)276, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Temple and was an Army veteran. He was a volunteer at Maryview Hospital for several years and was employed with Maryview Hospital Pharmacy Security.
Survivors include his wife, Aileen Sanders; a daughter, Vicky Sanders Slaughter and husband, Ken of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Jerry Dowless and wife, Liz of Nags Head, N.C.; two sisters, Betty S. Murphyy and Helen S. Fisher, both of Portsmouth; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in West End United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Hawkins and Dr. Donald Traylor. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery with Masonic rites. Visitation will be in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to H.E.R. Shelter, Help & Emergency Response, P.O.
