U.S. Coast Guard crews from Air Station Elizabeth City and Station Cape Hatteras assisted in two sea rescues late last week.
A helicopter crew from Elizabeth City responded to a fire Friday morning aboard an 868-foot container ship, with 32 people on board, off Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia.
No one was reported injured from the fire that broke out in the ship's engine room about 9:30 a.m. The blaze was extinguished about 1 1/2 hours later. Several small boats aided in the rescue efforts.
Earlier that morning a Coast Guard helicopter hoisted a six-man crew off a disabled Army tug and onto the guided-missile cruiser Normandy, which was en route to Sunny Point, N.C., and able to assist.
The tug suffered engine trouble and had difficulty maneuvering in rough seas. A Coast Guard 44-foot patrol boat from Cape Hatteras and a C-130 airplane from Elizabeth City also helped with the rescue.
