STRONG DEFENSE CARRIES CATHOLIC THE CRUSADERS HELD HAMPTON ROADS ACADEMY TO 6 POINTS IN THE 2ND HALF.

To win a game of basketball, one team has to put more shots into the goal than the other. And to do so, you have to shoot.

In a 45-25 Catholic High victory Tuesday, opponent Hampton Roads Academy must have forgotten that basic fundamental.

The Navigators shot only four times in the third quarter and failed every time. In the fourth, they got only six points on eight attempts.

Hampton Roads didn't score a second-half basket until there were only three minutes left in the game.

By then, Catholic had methodically built a 20-point lead and secured its Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools lead at 5-0.

The Crusaders can take some credit for Hampton Roads' reluctancy to shoot.

``I think we were definitely frustrating them with our defense,'' Catholic guard Andrew Prickett said. ``Our defense has been the key to us winning.''

Catholic switched from its normal man-to-man in the second half, opting for a 2-3 zone that obviously frustrated the Navigators.

``All of a sudden, everybody became tentative,'' said Hampton Roads coach Max Gillespie, whose team was without the TCIS's No. 4 scoring in Jimmy Moorman. ``Usually, a 2-3 doesn't bother us, but the guys said they just didn't feel like they had any good looks.

``We collectively lost our confidence to shoot tonight.''

The contest was tight in the first half, with Hampton Roads (10-5, 2-3) closing the halftime gap to 23-19 on Greg Bane's two free throws near the end of the second period.

But after two early misses in the third quarter, the Navigators stopped shooting.

Meanwhile, Catholic (9-8, 5-0) was getting five points from Eric Washburn and four from Bert Holmes. Jamie Rogers added a free throw to complete a 10-0 run in the third period that continued into a 16-0 run early in the fourth.

Washburn and Holmes led Catholic with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and the Crusaders got scoring out of seven other players. Rogers had eight rebounds, while Washburn had seven and Byron Whitehead had five.

Bane led all scorers with 12 points. Teammate Josh Harris scored his team's only points - six - in the second half. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
