Today I mourn the loss of friends Terrie Timms and Bill Rosbe, killed last Saturday night when a van pursued by police hit them broadside in downtown Norfolk. They never saw it coming. The tragedy of this is compounded by the irony that Terrie and Bill were brought together by mutual solace and understanding. Each had suffered the recent untimely loss of a spouse and, with this devastating common experience between them, they were beginning their lives again. Young children are now without parents.
The driver of the van should get what he deserves. And while the pursuit of criminals on the highway is unlikely to stop, at what point do law-enforcement agencies examine their actions and accept a level of responsibility for the lost lives of innocent bystanders caught in the middle? It is truly a tragedy for all concerned. I can only pray that God will protect the future of the children and give strength to the families involved.
