Fishermen can help clean the waters that provide their livelihoods through a recycling program for old fishing gear.
The state Office of Waste Reduction will accept old fishing nets and crab pots for free disposal until Feb. 5 at sites across North Carolina.
Special blue highway signs will mark the sites that have trash bins for the waste. One trash bin will be marked for nets; crab pots should be flattened and stacked in the designated areas.
Crabbers in North Carolina dispose of nearly a quarter of a million crab pots each year, according to North Carolina Sea Grant. The recycling program is aimed at keeping them from ending up along river banks and in tidal creeks. by CNB
