NORTHERN VA. FIRE OFFICIAL IS NEW NAGS HEAD CHIEF

Capt. Tim Morrison of the Fairfax County, Va., Fire and Rescue Department will become the new chief of Nags Head's fire department, town officials announced Wednesday.

Morrison, who has worked with the fire department in Northern Virginia for 20 years, will begin his new duties April 24.

``I am extremely proud and honored that Tim will be joining the Nags Head Fire and Rescue Department,'' Nags Head Town Manager Webb Fuller said. ``I believe his experience and training in fire service, combined with his commitment to community-oriented government - and his appreciation for the Outer Banks - will make Tim an excellent addition to the town of Nags Head.

``I know Tim and his family are looking forward to moving to Nags Head and becoming part of the community.''

During his two decades of service with the Fairfax department, Morrison rose through the ranks from firefighter to his position of captain. He has worked extensively with paid and volunteer fire fighting personnel, Nags Head town officials said. And he has thorough training in fire, rescue and water safety services.

Morrison serves as the executive field training officer at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md.

He replaces Bill Ryan, who has served as interim Nags Head fire chief since Oct. 1. Ryan, the department's former Ocean Rescue director, filled in after former Nags Head Fire Chief Doug Remaley resigned from his town post in September. Remaley, who had been the town fire chief since 1985, now works for Dare County.

The Nags Head fire chief position carries an annual salary of $36,894 to $43,336.

Kevin Zorc, a veteran Nags Head firefighter, has been the town's deputy chief since September. by CNB
