James T. Fang, who has been under fire for the past year as chairman of the University of Virginia's student-run Honor Committee, has resigned his post and is leaving the university to undergo cancer treatment.
Fang, a senior engineering student from Grafton, underwent surgery as a freshman to remove cancer from his leg. Last week, doctors removed a cancerous tumor from his lung, he announced Sunday night. He will withdraw from the university for the rest of the year to undergo chemotherapy.
Fang and other members of the honor panel's executive committee came under fire last summer when allegations surfaced that administrators pressured them to grant an expelled student a new trial. The student subsequently was found innocent.
Some members of the Honor Committee unsuccessfully moved to impeach Fang in the fall. He steadfastly has stood by the committee's decisions, saying the students were not influenced by the administration.
``Jimmy has been an incredible chair through a very difficult year,'' said Laurie Brien, the honor panel's vice chairwoman for advisers.
Paige Lester, the committee's vice chairwoman for trials, will head the committee until members elect a new leader Saturday. by CNB
