Melvin Sherlock Phelps, 81, of the 300 block of Carawan Lane, died Wednesday at his residence.
Mr. Phelps was born in Windsor, N.C., and was the son of the late William and Martha White Phelps. He had retired from J.G. Wilson Company as a cost accountant and former treasurer. He was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon Emeritus and secretary of his Sunday School class. He was a member of Great Bridge Masonic Lodge (NU)257 and a former member of the Indian River Masonic Lodge, a member of Great Bridge, Portlock and Woodland Heights Senior Clubs, Portlock Bible Study, Saints Alive of Chesapeake and Gideons International, Chesapeake, East Camp.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hudson Phelps; one daughter, Patricia P. Huggan of Canterbury, Conn.; and one sister, Ruby Miller of Windsor, N.C.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Woodland Heights Baptist Church by Dr. Ken Barnes and the Rev. Paul Moore. Burial will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The family suggests memorials be made to the Gideons International, Chesapeake, East Camp.
