The Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday night to support a public referendum on extended area telephone service (EAS) between exchanges in Currituck County and Dare County's north beach communities.
Residents of Coinjock and Corolla, as well as several northern Dare County businesses and home owners, are seeking an end to North Carolina's moratorium on EAS service.
``We felt that it would be best to find out if the citizens of Kill Devil Hills support this,'' said Town Manager Debora Diaz.
Last year, residents of Hatteras Island and the northern Dare County mainland approved EAS service between the two areas through special ballots included in their telephone bills.
In other business, the commissioners voted to consider at their next meeting an ordinance which would allow skateboarding, roller skating, and in-line skating on certain streets in the town. Such activity is currently prohibited.
Also, the board voted to contribute one-third of the cost of an evaluation of reverse osmosis units in the county's north beach water system, and to determine if membrane replacement is necessary in the system. The town of Nags Head and Dare County will pay for the remainder of the $11,000 study. by CNB
