BOAT AGROUND

A 35-foot commercial fishing boat named the Genesis was still aground Thursday in Oregon Inlet, two days after hanging up on a sandbar Tuesday morning.

The boat was visible to motorists traveling the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge.

Owned by Pete Reichert of Wanchese, the Genesis began taking on water during a fishing expedition, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Daniels of Group Cape Hatteras.

The captain purposefully beached the vessel to keep it from sinking. Both crew members were rescued in a four-wheel drive which Coast Guard officers maneuvered out to the inlet on a shoal, Daniels said.

No one was hurt. A commercial salvage crew is trying to recover the boat. by CNB
