Throughout Thursday afternoon, black smoke billowed for miles above the sandy stretch of Currituck County's barrier island beaches.
Officials of the Corolla Fire and Rescue Department said the fire was intentionally set on land around the Currituck Shooting Club.
The controlled burn was approved and permitted by the N.C. Division of Forestry. by CNB
