W&M COACH DALY TO TAKE JOB WITH WOMEN'S SOCCER LEAGUE

William and Mary women's soccer coach John Daly, who has led the Tribe to the NCAA tournament seven times in his eight-year tenure, has been named head coach of the Hampton Roads franchise in the 24-team United States Women's Interregional Soccer League.

``I'm very excited because for college coaches, this is what's always been missing,'' Daly said. ``We have excellent players who love the game dearly, but when they finish school, there's been nowhere for them to go.''

Daly has a 106-43-9 career record at William and Mary, including a 17-4 mark this season.

``John is the most experienced women's coach in the area as far as coaching at a high level,'' said Hampton Roads Mariners general manager Shawn McDonald. ``He knows who's come through the college level the last five or 10 years.''

The women's team, still to be named, will play a 10-game schedule in the USISL's six-team South Atlantic Division. Players will compete as amateurs, and the team will be managed by the Mariners' front office.

Daly plans to have a 26-player roster. Current William and Mary players are prohibited from the team, but Daly can use up to five players from any other university.

Allison Ankerson and Kim Stewart, former Maury High School stars, are also among those being recruited, Daly said.

Daly said tryouts will be held in late April or early May. Play will begin in May, although the schedule hasn't been set. Tickets will be $4 for adults, $3 for youths and free for Mariners season ticket holders. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
