Harry A. Reid, 75, formerly of Norfolk, died on Jan. 21, 1995.
Mr. Reid, an educator, was born in Norfolk and attended Norfolk public schools. He graduated from Virginia State College in 1940 and later earned Master's degrees in math education from Southwestern University, Tucson. Mr. Reid served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a teacher of math in Norfolk and Portsmouth public schools, Alabama A&M College and R.C. Lee High School in New Haven, Conn., where he also chaired the math department, retiring in 1985. He taught many summers in the Upward Bound program at Yale and on other campuses.
In the Norfolk area, Mr. Reid was active in real estate and insurance for several years. A founding member of the Norfolk Congress of Racial Equality, he worked tirelessly and effectively in the civil rights movement. He was also active in the arts, including participation in productions of The Little Theatre of Norfolk. He was a member of the Unitarian Church of Norfolk.
Mr. Reid is survived by numerous loving friends.
