The N.C. Department of Transportation decided Friday that the new Elizabeth City bypass that will carry U.S. 17 will start near a prison far north of the city and end below the Foreman Bundy Road south of town.
The designated route will be 9.3 miles long and will extend through Tanglewood Farms property west of the city. Right-of-way purchase is to begin next year and the road should be completed by the end of the century, DOT officials said.
``The route was chosen because it has the least social impact and will have only minimal affects on the environment,'' said William Jones, a DOT spokesman in Raleigh.
The bypass will cost $33 million, according to R.V. Owens III of Manteo, the N.C. Transportation Board member for the Albemarle. A public hearing on the design will be held later this year, Owens said. by CNB
