A WEEKEND RECIPE: RAIN, FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW NO ACCUMULATION IS FORECAST FOR HAMPTON ROADS, BUT ROADS COULD BECOME SLIPPERY.

Forecasters grew more insistent Friday that today should bring a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and snow to Hampton Roads, and perhaps major snowfall over most of the rest of Virginia.

If the forecasts hold, residents of southeast Virginia can look forward to rainy days and snowy nights until early next week.

A winter storm watch is in effect for southeastern Virginia today, and a winter storm warning is posted for areas to the west.

``Cold air near the surface will be reinforced by Arctic air over the weekend, producing a messy winter scenario across much of the mid-Atlantic region,'' said Andrew Stern of the National Weather Service office in Washington. ``Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is forecast to push northeast, producing periods of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.''

The winter storm warning ``means that four or more inches of snow is likely within the next 24 hours'' in central and western Virginia, Stern said Friday. ``Localized accumulation totals of nearly 10 inches are possible within the warning area if bands of heavier snow develop.''

While no accumulation was being forecast for Hampton Roads, roads could become icy, especially inland, where temperatures may be a few degrees cooler than along the coast. MEMO: To hear special weather statements, if issued, call INFOLINE at
