Like many Virginians, I want state government to live within its means. However, I am very concerned about the budget priorities. If we let Governor Allen set the budget priorities, the Old Dominion will soon be known as the state with first-rate prisons and third-rate schools.
To cut services and needed programs to hungry children, the working poor, the disabled and senior adults in order to provide $46 of annual tax relief for the average family is unjust. What makes us a civilized people is that we act justly and compassionately toward the most vulnerable in our community.
I hope that Virginians will call their representatives and urge them to keep those programs that provide help and hope. Then in November when those who resisted the stampede to lower taxes are called ``spendthrifts,'' I and others like me must remember their courage and wisdom at the polls.
