Social workers Ann Van Buren and Mary Marlins discussed some programs handled by the Department of Social Services at a recent meeting of Suffolk Services and Emergencies.
Van Buren explained that tax relief for the elderly runs from Jan. 1 to May 31 for homeowners over 65 or disabled. The program, which saves qualifying citizens a percentage off their real estate taxes, applies mainly to those living in their own home, although it also assists those living in a nursing home whose homes are empty. Those who qualify should apply through the Social Services Department for guidelines.
The Companion Program, run through Social Services, was designed to keep handicapped elderly persons out of nursing homes for a longer time. Marlins said the companions' wages have been increased to reflect the change in the minimum wage, with appropriate taxes deducted. by CNB
