An admiral who heads a Norfolk-based NATO command has been named president the Naval War College, the Pentagon announced Friday.
Rear Adm. James R. Stark has been named to relieve Rear Adm. Joseph C. Strasser.
Stark is commander of the Standing Naval Forces, Atlantic, a component of NATO's Norfolk-based Atlantic command. His flagship is the guided-missile cruiser Yorktown, also based in Norfolk.
Stark graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1965. He studied at the University of Vienna in Austria for a year as a Fulbright scholar, then, in 1970, began graduate studies in foreign policy at Tufts University. Stark graduated from Tufts with two master's degrees and a doctorate in political science in 1973.
Stark's sea duty assignments include tours on the Brownson, the Wilkinson, the Jenkins and the Highbee. He was an executive officer on the Myles C. Fox and the Richmond K. Turner, and commanded the Julius A. Furer and the Leahy. ILLUSTRATION: Stark by CNB
