HENRY S. HUGHES SR.

Henry Shaw Hughes Sr., 90, of the 2900 block of Lens Ave., retired owner of Hughes Marine Railway, died Jan. 29, 1995, in Norfolk.

Mr. Hughes was born in Currituck County, N.C., where he was a longtime resident. He was a member of Gateway Freewill Baptist Church in Norfolk and Naomi Masonic Lodge (NU)87.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Whitehurst Hughes; two sons, Melvin A. Hughes of Knotts Island, N.C., and the Rev. Henry S. Hughes Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Annie Perry of Morganton, N.C.; three brothers, Luther Hughes of Alexandria, Va., Willis Hughes of Virginia Beach and Julian Hughes of Missoula, Mont.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Gateway Freewill Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. K. Dale Burden. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at their residence, 2925 Lens Ave., Norfolk, at other times. Contributions may be made to Gateway Freewill Baptist Church.
