Three people were hurt slightly in an apartment fire Tuesday that damaged a dozen units and displaced about 20 residents, authorities said.
Firefighters assigned to Engine 7's B Shift rescued a 28-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter who were trapped on a third-floor balcony at the Ashbrook Apartments shortly after the fire began at 7:45 a.m., fire spokesman Chase Sargent said.
Other firefighters rescued the resident of a second-floor apartment where the blaze began. The wooden apartment building is in the 200 block of Honeybrook Drive.
A black Labrador retriever died in a third-floor apartment, Sargent said.
Sargent said the fire was accidental but investigators had not determined the exact cause.
Neighbors said the fire broke through a front window of the second-floor apartment and billowed into the third-floor landing.
The mother who was rescued, identified as Michele Smith, was treated for smoke inhalation at Virginia Beach General Hospital and released. Her daughter was not injured.
The resident of the second-floor apartment where the fire started, identified as Bradley A. Collier, 22, was treated at the hospital for a third-degree burn on his leg.
Another resident, Teresa Price, was also treated for smoke inhalation.
Police closed the eastbound lanes of Virginia Beach Boulevard near Princess Anne High School for about an hour.
Firefighters controlled the blaze in about 30 minutes.
The apartment building was heavily damaged.
Sargent said the complex's property management officials were working to relocate the displaced residents.
