A 120-foot barge loaded with concrete pilings was purposely grounded on a sand bar late Monday near the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel when it began taking on water.
Coast Guard officials said the barge, owned by Tidewater Construction Co. and being towed by the tug Cedonia Crosby, was grounded to prevent sinking.
The Coast Guard cutter Point Arena stood by throughout the night, and a crane was preparing to unload the 75-foot-long pilings Tuesday. There was no immediate hazard to navigation, officials said.
Officials will try to determine what caused the barge to leak. by CNB
