Michele Smith is comforted by her mother, Irene Datig, after

Smith and her 6-year-old daughter were rescued from a third-floor

balcony during a fire Tuesday morning at the Ashbrook Apartments on

Honeybrook Drive. Smith was worried because her dog was missing; the

black Labrador retriever later was found dead inside her apartment.

Three people were treated for minor injuries, and a dozen units were

damaged.
