A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from Elizabeth City on Tuesday was given the 1994 Igor I. Sikorsky Award for Humanitarian Service.
The award is given annually by the Helicopter Association International and is sponsored by Sikorsky Aircraft for "person or persons who best demonstrate the value of rotorcraft to society through saving of life, protection of property, and amelioration of distress."
The crew received the award at a Las Vegas ceremony for rescuing three people from the 52-foot sailing vessel Dutchess on Dec. 5, 1993.
The Coast Guard team saved three sailors who had jumped from their boat into dangerous seas during a winter gale about 170 nautical miles east of Cape Hatteras.
Receiving the humanitarian award were Lt. Bruce Jones, aircraft commander; Lt.j.g. Mark Collier, co-pilot; AE3 Thomas Parker, hoist operator; ASM2 Scott Adlon, rescue swimmer; and AT2 Matthew Moyer, air crewman. by CNB
