MARTIN SLOANE, the syndicated columnist who suggests saving money instead of spending it in the grocery aisles, now tells how to save time.
Sloane's ``The 10-Minute Shopper'' (Berkeley Books, 1995) is a guide to quickly getting in and out of the store.
Sloane, whose column is a regular feature of Flavor, offers these tips, among others:
Make a list of needed items. Keep it on the kitchen wall or refrigerator so you're ready to shop when the urge strikes.
Shop in pairs. Divide the list in two, with each person covering half the store.
Obey the traffic rules. In other words, no back-tracking or U-turns. Keep going forward.
Explore life in the fast lane. Meet your partner at the express checkout. But pay separately, so each of you is allowed the maximum number of items.
Gourmet getaways
To offset the winter blahs, the Williamsburg Inn is offering three gourmet weekends.
From Feb. 9 to 12, it's ``Light and Healthy, California Style.'' From March 2 to 5, it's ``A Fabulous Feast of France.'' And ``A Traditional Mediterranean Experience'' will be from March 23 to 26.
Each ``weekend'' begins with a Thursday evening reception and ends with a gala dinner Saturday evening. In between, participants can attend sessions about desserts, kitchen gadgets, techniques and wine tasting.
Rates range from $499 to $633, double occupancy. Registration is required 10 days in advance. Call 1-220-7979.
Bittersweet tale
It's the greatest thing since the chocolate chip.
Hershey Foods Corp. is packaging bittersweet chocolate for grocery-store sales. No more searching the gourmet markets. Try it when you want a less-sugary version of a recipe calling for semisweet chocolate. MEMO: More morsels/F1
