GATE OPENS ON VHSL SCHOLARSHIP RACE

Notes on a frayed white cuff . . .

Now's the time for local high schools to nominate some of their athletic standouts for scholarships being offered by the Virginia High School League.

The VHSL will award nine $1,000 scholarships, funded by Central Fidelity Bank and the Virginia News Network.

The awards will go to graduating seniors across the state.

The requirements:

a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

one varsity letter earned

involved in other school-sponsored activities

involvement in charity work or other activity outside of school events

two letters of endorsement

an essay written by the nominee describing how extracurricular activities have enhanced his/her educational experience.

The nominations will close March 15.

Norcom's Rudy Howard, who will sign a football grant with Hampton University this week, expects to play cornerback for the Pirates.

A two-way starter at Norcom as a fullback and defensive back, Howard was a first-team All-Group AAA pick and a two-time All-Tidewater selection for his work in the secondary.

``I don't mind not playing offense,'' said Howard, who led Norcom in both scoring and rushing. ``I would rather hit than be hit.''

Howard said the fact that Hampton U. is moving into Division 1 football next season had no bearing on his decision. ``If you play good, you'll be noticed no matter where you play,'' he said.

One of the first in the locker room to congratulate the Norfolk State basketball team after its big 67-60 victory over Virginia Union was Bob Smith.

Smith was head coach of the Spartans from 1969 to 1973 and his teams won 86 and lost only 25.

The former Norcom High School coach is still the all-time winningest coach among Portsmouth high school basketball coaches.

Local Elks Hoop Shoot qualifiers will compete Saturday at Lake Taylor Middle School for the district championship.

The district winners advance to the state finals Feb. 19 at Falls Church.

Three Portsmouth and two Chesapeake youngsters qualified in the Portsmouth competition at Hodges Manor Elementary School. The local winners were Portsmouth's Rachael Eure (8-9 girls), Amanda Rhodes (10-11 girls) and Adam Jackson (10-11 boys). Chesapeake winners were Brandon Hanks (8-9 boys) and Bob Hooper (12-13 boys). by CNB
