CITYWIDE MEET TODAY TO FEATURE 4 NEW CLUB TEAMS

The Beach's first high school swim season will conclude with a citywide meet at the Princess Anne Community Recreation Center pool at 3 p.m. today.

The 10 Beach District high schools formed four club teams for the inaugural season in the water. Next year, the sport will switch to varsity status under the Virginia High School League.

This season, each club had a boys and a girls team, and each can enter two swimmers or two relay teams per event in the championship meet. A boys and a girls champion will be crowned this afternoon.

Cox and First Colonial swimmers performed under the Great Neck club banner. The boys from Great Neck posted a 5-1 record to tie the Princess Anne boys in the regular-season standings. The girls finished the season with at 6-0 - the only undefeated team in the city.

Karen Lamoureux, a 16-year-old sophomore at Cox, led the girl Great Neckers.

The host club, Princess Anne, consists of Ocean Lakes, Kellam and Salem High School swimmers. The Princess Anne boys team is led by Adam Chissler.

Tallwood and Kempsville high schools joined forces to form the Kempsville club and the three remaining schools - Bayside, Princess Anne and Green Run - swim out of the Bayside Recreation Center.

Laura Eldredge teaches at Ocean Lakes High School and is one of the Princess Anne club's coaches. She voiced guarded optimism about her club's chances.

``We have some area-ranked swimmers, Adam Chissler, Jeff Lewis and Ryan O'Mera, Joseph Williams for the boys and Julie Leystan and Kristin Thorn for the girls,'' she said. ``The Hollowell sisters, Monica and Michelle, have been doing well.

``The boys relays are strong and we have strong butterfly and backstroke swimmers for both. The Great Neck girls are tough to beat. Our boys should do OK. I hope we can finish in the top two for both.'' by CNB
