Sen. John Warner is a Virginia statesman. He honors his oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. He did not break with his party; rather, they deserted his conservative voice of reason. He knows that Virginians vote to elect their representatives - that these seats are not for sale.
Virginia voters will suffer the antics of many colorful clowns but not send them to the Congress. When John Warner offered Virginia Republicans (and Democrats) an alternative, his stature grew as a statesman. All Virginians had to recognize that here indeed was a man of honor. This senator would not compromise his convictions or lower his principles.
Virginians insist on feeling proud of our congressmen. We can forget personal marital upsets, but not national insult or trickery. As a liberal Democrat, I will often disagree with Senator Warner, but I will vote for him. If his party continues its censure, I will vote for him under whatever political auspice he accepts. If necessary, I will write his name on my ballot.
And I am not alone.
