Battered by depressed tobacco sales in conflict-ridden Eastern Europe, Richmond-based Universal Corp. said net income for its fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31 fell to $14.9 million, or 43 cents a share, from $20.2 million, or 57 cents a share, in the previous year's second quarter. The latest quarter included a pre-tax write-down of $6.5 million related to Eastern Europe, Universal said. The leaf-trading company said its worldwide revenues rose to $964 million in the September-December quarter from $864 million a year earlier. by CNB
