The City of Norfolk has placed weight limits on the 26th Street Bridge over the Lafayette River to decrease heavy vehicle traffic, officials said Friday.
Effective immediately, traffic on the bridge is limited to 18 tons for vehicles such as dump trucks and 34 tons for tractor-trailers. Buses and vans are allowed to use the bridge.
Eastbound heavy vehicles will be detoured to Lindenwood Avenue to northbound Tidewater Drive. Westbound vehicles will be detoured southbound on Tidewater Drive to westbound Lindenwood.
The bridge will undergo major construction later this winter, officials said. During the overhaul, scheduled to last 18 to 24 months, one lane of traffic will be open each way. by CNB
