An operating room nurse at Suffolk's Obici Hospital has won a $1 million medical malpractice suit against a Richmond doctor who cut a nerve in her leg.
The nurse, Nancy DeLoatch, won the award from Dr. William Foster after a two-day jury trial in Richmond Circuit Court. DeLoatch claimed she was injured during surgery in 1992 at Richmond's Retreat for the Sick Hospital. She was represented by Norfolk lawyer Thomas Harlan.
DeLoatch claimed the doctor accidentally cut the nerve while trying to repair a stress fracture in her leg, Harlan said. As a result, she must wear a foot brace for the rest of her life. The nurse is still working at Obici Hospital.
